Job Summary

Coordinates the day to day activities of multiple research projects. Projects monitor field samples using traditional microscopy, environmental DNA (eDNA) and next-generation sequencing, as well field-deployed, remote real-time flow cytometry, to determine the composition of microalgal communities. These data are coupled with metabolomic analyses including targeted measurement of toxins (i.e., brevetoxins, anatoxins, microcystins, saxitoxins, etc.) as well as standard water quality parameters, e.g., pH, conductivity, chl-a, TP, TN/TKN, DOC, DOM, etc. This research will contribute to a publicly-available database for use by resource managers, and moreover, as a means of monitoring and forecasting blooms of toxigenic HAB and HAP species in marine and freshwater habitats. Coordinator will coordinate
day-to-day activities in the lab and assist the PI with overall project management.

  • Coordinates the day-to-day activities in the laboratory.
  • Oversees and ensures collection of lab and field data, including the collection of data from other lab members.
  • Documents samples and daily activities in project laboratory notebooks.
  • Performs sample processing, including DNA extraction and toxin extraction/enrichment.
  • Performs Computational analysis using software for metagenomics investigations (PhyloFlash, Qiime2).
  • Establish and maintain relationships with participants and PI, including outside participants and internal employees
  • Assists the PI with short- and long-range resource planning, e.g., ordering reagents and consumables to ensure research continues unimpeded.
  • Performs analysis of algal toxins by high-resolution liquid-chromatography mass spectrometry (Agilent and Shimadzu instruments)
  • Contributes to the writing and preparation of reports and manuscripts for projects.
  • Assists PI with the writing and preparation of grant proposals and supporting documentation, e.g., budget, budget justification, scope of work.
  • Provides training to junior members on lab procedures and sample processing.
  • May supervise lower-level staff
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge in Data analysis using Excel, R Studio
  • Experience maintaining and operating McLane Imaging FlowCytoBots
