I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Procures blood specimens from patients for laboratory procedures and prepares samples for testing by centrifugation, pouring aliquots, labeling specimens, pHing, weighing/measuring, processing samples by volumes and temperature, aliquoting, labeling and documentation of all pieces of required patient history and sample processing.
2. Meets and greets couriers and prepares specimens for courier pickups for delivery to reference laboratories.
3. Coordinates and handles the manifesting, packing with appropriate temperature control, and shipping of laboratory samples according to DOT regulations.
4. Monitors outstanding sample management reports and exception reports from reference laboratories. Handles issues/problems identified or reported by reference laboratories by documenting the occurrence and suggested resolution of problem or by communicating lab-related testing problems/issues to the appropriate resource.
5. Provides recommendations regarding possible process improvements or other actions to reduce the occurrence of problems and/or improve quality.
6. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

1. High School diploma

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Minimum three (3) years of related experience in laboratory environment with demonstrated related technical experience
2. Strong working knowledge of lab operations and knowledge of medical terminology
3. Ability to learn the hospital and laboratory computer systems
4. Ability to use equipment such as centrifuges, pipettes, and computers
5. Experience utilizing personal computers and proficiency with standard Microsoft Office Suite applications
6. Demonstrated highly effective problem-solving abilities with strong attention to detail
7. Strong interpersonal skills with emphasis on diplomacy, professionalism, and good listening techniques
8. Ability to work independently

Preferred:
1. Specimen processing experience in a hospital setting preferred

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
