Job Description

As a UMKC employee within the Boiler Maintenance Operator trade, you will perform skilled work primarily involving maintenance, repair, and operation of boilers and other equipment related to heating and cooling.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform skilled work primarily involving maintenance, repair, and operation of boilers and other equipment related to heating and cooling. Review is accomplished through occasional spot-checking and observation of work for overall effectiveness. Functional contacts are limited primarily to co-workers with occasional contact with other University staff.
  • Periodically clean boilers inside and out, removing soot and other residue from floors, firesides, and boiler tubes, using electric tube cleaners, water hoses, and other hand tools. Inspect for excessive scaling, cracks or other defects. Disassemble and reassemble such parts as necessary to facilitate cleaning of the boiler and its working parts. Take boiler off the line preparatory to overhauling and places boiler back on line on completion of maintenance and repair.
  • Maintain freeze protection system. Maintain and properly respond to alarms from the automated system. May be required to evacuate a building in the event of a dangerous situation equipment, and painting floors, pipes, fixtures, and equipment in the power plant.
  • Check boilers on a day-to-day basis for proper functioning, detection of leaks or other problems, replaces or does minor repairs on defective or damaged parts. Make routine repairs on boilers, related equipment, and power plant fixtures. Replace packing, and some worn parts. Periodically overhaul solenoids, fans, and repairs leaks in water and steam lines and assists in major repairs as directed by superior. Perform various cleaning and maintenance duties such as sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, lubricating equipment, and painting floors, pipes, fixtures, and equipment in the power plant.
  • May relieve or substitute for other positions performing all routine duties regularly assigned to such positions, typically involving maintenance duties. Read and record information from various gauges and instrumentation devices; manipulate controls to attain desired level.
  • Must be able to change system from gas fuel to fuel oil when required by the gas company. Maintain chemical treatment of boilers to keep boilers and pipes from deteriorating and as energy efficient as possible.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Shift

Saturday to Wednesday, 8:00am to 4:00pm (off Thursday and Friday)

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent; demonstrated skills may offset this requirement.
  • Boiler Fireman's license or equivalent experience to obtain the license within twelve (12) months is required. (Six years of experience in this area normally required to maintain a city license).
  • Knowledge of heating boilers with ability to operate boilers and associated equipment.
  • Good physical health and physical coordination.
Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience operating and maintaining HVAC systems and Building Management Systems.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.
