Position Description

The Department Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in experimental or theoretical condensed/soft matter physics. The starting date for the position is September 1, 2025.

About the College

Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts and Sciences is comprised of 15 departments, offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities. social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. The college has more than 10,000 students enrolled representing more than a quarter of the overall Texas Tech University student population while maintaining an 22:1 student to faculty ratio.

About the Department/School/Area

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has about 20 faculty, with research clusters in astrophysics, condensed matter physics and particle physics and additional activity in biophysics, and physics education research. Major/Essential Functions

Complement existing research areas in the TTU Condensed Matter group by bringing in new interests and capabilities while also having potential for collaborative interactions. Teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Faculty Qualifications


  • PhD in Physics, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three years of post-doctoral experience. However, an outstanding early-career research record may substitute for this requirement.
  • Evidence of high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level by providing a summary of student teaching evaluations or a letter from a department chair. However, an outstanding teaching assistant record may be substituted for this requirement.
  • A strong track record of publications.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability to conduct research that complements existing areas and fosters productive interactions with current faculty, subject to but not limited in condensed matter field.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated interest in and capacity for doing outreach and service tasks
  • A record of submissions indicative of an active pursuit of external research funding is desirable.
