Job Summary

The research data analyst will join the Department of Ophthalmology and work closely with a collaborative and exciting team at the F.I. Proctor Foundation studying eye diseases in the U.S. and internationally. Researchers at the F.I. Proctor Foundation conduct randomized controlled trials and large epidemiological studies on ocular diseases that can cause blindness, and is widely regarded as the preeminent center for eye-related research in the world. The epidemiological studies involve large-scale, population-based research of electronic health records databases with millions of observations ("Big Data"), and the trials involve domestic and international collaboration. This position requires a team member with excellent technical programming skills along with communication and organizational skills. The analyst will support research studies by: contributing to research study design (including clinical trials), study monitoring, database creation, data collection and retrieval, data management, primary statistical analysis of a complex nature, and assistance with grant writing and publications. The position requires a team member that is comfortable with self-directed work and can work in a diverse team environment. The successful candidate will have experience conducting statistical analyses of large datasets. Experience with large electronic health records databases and tools for working on big data projects in remote, cloud computing environments is a plus. The employee should show a strong interest in clinical research and a desire to contribute to the state of knowledge on the prevention, treatment, and correlates of disease.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $67,000 - $94,200 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Ophthalmology became established as a department separate from Otolaryngology in 1912 at the University of California San Francisco. Since that time the Department of Ophthalmology has grown steadily and today includes the clinical facilities of three major hospitals. The Department of Ophthalmology is organized around faculty members with subspecialty skills and expertise. The department combines one of the nation's leading vision research programs with outstanding clinical care. The research and multicenter clinical facilities of the Department of Ophthalmology comprise the Beckman Vision Center.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS with a major in a related field of quantitative science (e.g. data science, statistics, public health, epidemiology) and one+ years experience in project management or clinical research, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with statistical software languages (R).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of various study designs
  • Knowledge of database creation and management.
  • Experience and ability to work and interact positively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Highly organized and able to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Independence, planning, and problem-solving abilities to complete assigned duties

Preferred Qualifications


  • Graduate degree in data science, epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, public health or related field and two to three years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with large administrative or electronic health record datasets
  • Experience with SQL
  • Experience with Python
  • Familiarity with reproducible and transparent research methods and tools
  • Experience in writing, editing, and reviewing scientific manuscripts
  • Experience in clinical research or demonstrated research or training experience that translates into a clinical research setting
