Job Summary

The AI Oversight and Policy Lead will oversee the day-to-day operations of the AI Oversight Committee, manage the development and implementation of AI-related policies, and support the strategic deployment of AI initiatives within UCSF Health. This role involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure that AI tools are trustworthy, ethically deployed, and compliant with a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape. This role assists in interpreting, monitoring and analyzing information regarding state and federal policies related to regulating artificial intelligence and provides consultative services to department administrators and other stakeholders.

The AI Oversight and Policy Lead will serve as the program manager for the Health AI Oversight Committee, ensuring that the evaluation and monitoring of AI tools meet UCSF Health's standards for trustworthiness and ethical deployment. The role also involves advising on AI-related policies in the healthcare setting, managing projects in response to evolving federal (FDA, ONC, etc.) and state regulations, and closely collaborating with university legal and compliance teams to ensure all deployments meet regulatory requirements. This role will be critical for ensuring the use of trustworthy AI at scale across UCSF Health, establishing policies to ensure responsible use of AI across the organization, and will inform work happening both at the UC level and nationally to support safe and effective use of these emerging technologies.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $128,600 - $192,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Health AI team at UCSF Health, led by the Chief Health AI Officer, is dedicated to the ethical and responsible integration of artificial intelligence into healthcare. This team plays a critical role in ensuring that AI tools deployed across the health system enhance patient care, streamline operations, and align with regulatory standards. The AI Oversight and Policy Lead will be central to managing the AI Oversight Committee, advising on AI policies, and supporting the execution of the AI strategy within UCSF Health.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• 7+ years of program management experience, with experience and strong skills managing complex, multidisciplinary initiatives.
• Extensive knowledge of AI governance and the regulatory landscape in healthcare.
• Advanced communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
• Expertise in navigating federal and state regulations, particularly in relation to AI in healthcare.
• Ability to manage complex issues in consultation with legal and compliance and institute effective mechanisms to support compliance in a dynamic regulatory environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills, with a focus on strategic thinking and policy development.
• Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with and influence others, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to balance competing demands and timelines to achieve organizational objectives

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in law, public policy, healthcare administration, or a related field
• Experience with AI governance and policy in the healthcare setting
• Understanding of electronic health records and how they are used
