Position Summary

Responsible for developing and executing initiatives that advance the Southern California camping ministries and its mission and to provide oversight for the entire camping ministries: programs, operations, guest services, finances, marketing, master planning and strategic operations.

Essential Functions



  • Encourage the professional and spiritual growth of staff under your care.


Work with the development department to assist in the execution of a systematic plan for Camp development efforts both locally and (when appropriate) divisionally.



  • Travel within the Southern California Division for the promotion of camp (both its summer programs as well as off-season rentals) including targeted fund-raising efforts working in coordination with DHQ's development department.
  • Responsibility for the Camp financial management, allowing for adequate annual funding and to meet long-term goals.
  • Manage property development and maintenance needs to ensure stewardship of current resources and identification of future needs.
  • Work with the Assistant Camp Director to conduct an annual assessment of property and maintenance needs
  • Provide oversight to the management staff, to aid in the process and maintaining of accreditation with authorized bodies such as ACA, CCCA, local regulations and TSA policies.
  • Support the Divisional Youth Secretary(s), Program Manager(s), and Guest Service Manager(s) in the implementation of a marketing plan to increase camper attendance and camp usage.
  • Prepare and analyze enrollment trends to provide data for the identification of future needs.
  • Approve and facilitate the necessary purchases of equipment and supplies within the policies and the approval of the DYS(s) and the Southern California Command Finance Council.
  • Develop and implement crisis and risk management procedures on an annual basis as directed by TSA.
  • Implement human resource management practices to recruit, develop, and retain year-round staff.
  • Provide support to the Divisional Youth Secretary(s) and Program Manager for the hiring and training of seasonal staff.
  • Provide an annual evaluation of year-round staff.
  • Work directly with the management staff(s) (operations, guest service, office, food service and program managers) to ensure that we are constantly improving and providing the highest level of service to our groups, campers, and staff in each of the management areas.
  • Work collaboratively with DYS(s) and DHQ to ensure the enhancement of the overall camp operation.
  • Research pricing information for competing camps and conference centers for review with the Assistant Camp Director, establishing and maintaining current pricing structures (internal and external) for services and facility use which are competitive in the regional marketplace.
  • Maintain a process for customer and employee feedback. Reviews and respond (if appropriate) to all comments, identifying areas needing improvement.
  • Coordinates with the Divisional Youth Secretary(s) and the Assistant Camp Director to create and implement a marketing plan and marketing material for Camp Camp Pine Summit.
  • Receiving and responding to after-hours emergency calls and establish on call rotation for rental groups needs throughout their stay.
  • Remain watchful for any emergency conditions or situation that may threaten the safety of visitors or may cause damage to the property and take action as appropriate.
  • Communicates and coordinates with the Divisional Youth Secretary to identify and recommend and assist with establishing short and long-range plans and goals to include renovation of present facilities, building of new facilities, and expansion of infrastructure for future programs; establishes operational mission and objectives for the stated facilities.
  • Responsible for hiring all necessary staff and performing annual written evaluation for staff under their supervision.


Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications



  • BA degree in Business and or related field, preferred.
  • Three to five years of experience in camp administration in a primary leadership role.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and facilities, camper and staff behavior.
  • Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing or walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more)
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis as needed to perform necessary duties.
  • Candidate must be willing to live on site in Salvation Army provided housing.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities



  • Knowledge of The Salvation Army mission, philosophy, culture, protocol and organizational structure.
  • Must have the ability to work well independently in a detailed, professional and courteous manner.
  • Combination of college education, training and experience in the camping industry.
  • Friendly and personable. Excellent customer service skills required.
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • A team player must work well with others.
  • Experience in supervision of staff.
  • Must have good communication skills, and pay close attention to detail.
  • Required to have a thorough knowledge of building policies, procedures and event requirements.
  • Word processing experience. Familiarity with Microsoft Windows, Word and Excel is especially valuable.
  • Possess a valid CA driver's license.
