ED Observation Unit Tech - Full Time, Nights

Shift: 3rd Status:Full Time

Job Summary:

The Observation Unit Tech assists the nursing and medical staff by performing selected procedures and tasks for the care of the Observation Unit patients. They also perform duties as Unit Secretary, thus having both a clinical and clerical aspect to their role. All functions must be within the scope of training and instruction received and is under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The following is a summary of the major functions of this position. Registered nurses may perform other duties, not specified in this document and specific functions may change as professional practice and standards evolve.

1. Performs desk duties in a clerical role with high levels of accuracy.

  • Answers phones utilizing proper telephone etiquette
  • Screens phone calls and forwards requests and messages appropriately
  • Enters calls utilizing the call log
  • Answers call lights and relays messages to appropriate nursing personnel
  • Acknowledges and assists all internal and external customers upon arrival at the nurses station
  • Ensures ongoing and accurate awareness of unit census and patient needs
  • Monitor tech duties such as identifying and relaying cardiac activity, escalating concerns, etc.

2. Provides care appropriate to the observation population and maintains the environment of care.

  • Assists in patient care with EKG's, splint application, crutch training and other patient care as assigned or identified.
  • Performs and documents appropriate patient procedures according to hospital policy and procedure.
  • Performs duties that enhance organization of patient care on the unit.
  • Cleans and stocks the department when time allows between patients.
  • Notifies appropriate resources upon identifying broken, missing, or equipment out of stock.
  • Maintains a safe environment in patient care.
  • Obtains blood specimens via venipuncture and labels specimens appropriately.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required:

1. High School diploma or equivalent with recent experience in a health care setting providing patient care.

2. BCLS certified with in the first 90 days.

3. Successful completion of required monitor tech training within six months.
